Welcome to Safecare

Violence against women is a problem throughout the world.

South Africa, for a country not at war, is considered to have one of the highest rates of male violence committed against women. The violent crime rate in our communities continues to soar whilst family violence increases in horrendous forms and at epidemic proportions.

In spite of the government legislated policies such as – The Family Violence Act of 1993 and The Domestic Violence Act 116 of 1998 to protect victims of domestic violence, especially women and children, the high incidences of family violence and abuse continues to increase daily.

The ongoing challenges of:

  • reducing the ever-increasing level of abuse against women and children
  • gross violations of human rights
  • rape related transmission of HIV/AIDS
has increased the social responsibility of our organisation.

Rural women in particular have been severely affected by violence and frequently find themselves unempowered and lacking in opportunities for improving their living conditions.

Care and support in times of need

Driven by the passion for community development, stalwarts of our community got together and Safecare was born out of this concern. These pioneers laboured tirelessly, even before the concept of a community care centre had materialized.

The main concern was that there was no place to take women & children to, whom where in a volatile situation.

By late October in 1998, the Safecare Community Care Centre was established. The naming of the organization was only done at the beginning of 1999. Safecare was established to provide a safe haven on a short -term basis for women & children and anyone who are victims of crime & abuse.

In 2003, Safecare was registered as a Non-Profit Organization. Later on several others joined our centre and volunteered & shared their ideas and talents, which proved to be invaluable.
